Dutch designer Marcel Wanders redesigns KLM airline’s dinner service.
I used to steal airline bowls and teacups as a kid to use for my dog bowls… I would pay money for these!! So elegant and typically Dutch.
Turn that bad boy upside down and start ripping it apart! Use a pair of pliers and a flathead screwdriver to pry up old tacks and staples holding your fabric to the frame. Remove all stuffing, dried-out foam, and any vinyl support straps, or in some cases horse hair and brass springs! All of these are unusable, so you can toss them. If there are any screws holding the frame in place OVER the fabric, start to remove them and keep them. Make note of what comes out as far as washers, bolts, pegs, and screws. What goes out must go back in! If it’s possible to remove the fabric without dismantling the frame, that’s what you should do.
Chances are you don’t have to treat your piece too gingerly. Check for weak spots in the frame or any decay or splits in the legs or vital support areas. If you need to dismantle the frame, use a rubber mallot to separate stubborn parts of the frame, the rubber absorbs the shock so that your wood doesn’t have to. And always protect any wood that has been finished, meaning sanded, stained, or polyurethaned.
in the beginning!
About me:
My name is Hill Holland. I trained in London at Univeristy of the Arts in 3-D design with a concentration in furniture. Now, back stateside, I stumbled upon a great find at Gallery 56, a consignment & antique store in Clinton, MA, a mid-century modern living room trio! Having enlisted in an upholstery short course in Boston, I decided to make one of these gems my guinea pig— test pilot of my beginner’s upholstery skills… It’s all unfolding as we speak…so here goes!
